Background
The WHO STEPwise approach to Surveillance is a simple, standardized method for collecting, analysing and disseminating data in WHO member countries.
The escalating level of overweight and obesity among children and adolescents is of particular concern, given the fact that changes in food habits are evident in all Eastern Mediterranean countries. Source: WHO EMRO Website
Project summary
Non-communicable diseases are the major causes of mortality and morbidity for Palestinians; responsible for 68.5% of all deaths in 2020. Between 2010 and 2020, there was a marked increase in the incidence of cancer from 53.7 per 100,000 populations to 115.8 per 100,000 population, respectively.
Per WHO recommendation we will conduct another STEPs survey as the first one was conducted in 2010/2011. This survey responds to the need for comprehensive, updated, and representative baseline data on the prevalence of NCD risk factors in order to develop appropriate interventions for effective prevention and control of NCDs before they overwhelm the country's health services and scarce resources. The study will be done in close collaboration with the World Health Organization and the Ministry of Health.
The target population consists of all Palestinian individuals aged 18 to 69 years, who have been living in Palestine for at least 12 months. We will use a three-stage stratified cluster sampling to select a random sample of 8784 adults from 549 enumeration areas; 3040 from the West Bank, and 2560 from the Gaza Strip. we will disseminate results at the region, age group level, and sex. Data will be collected from 2 separate regions, West Bank and Gaza.
Based on the study, we will be able to determine the prevalence of behavioral risk factors: tobacco use, excess sugar and salt intake, unhealthy diet, alcohol use, physical inactivity, sleep disturbances, and mental health among the Palestinian population, estimate the prevalence of hypertension, raised blood cholesterol, overweight and obesity, diabetes and kidney diseases, and assess the socio-demographic status and correlate with risk behavior.
