In cooperation with the Ministry of Health, the Palestinian National Institute of Public health has celebrated the World Cancer Day under the slogan: "We Can. I Can" on the 15th of February ,2016. His Excellency the Minister of Health Dr. Jawad Awwad attended the event as well as the Head of the World Health Organization (WHO) office in Palestine Dr. Gerald Rockenshaub.
In His speech Dr. Awwad said: "When talking about cancer incidence, unfortunately, it is increasing around the globe. It is projected to become the leading cause of death! The estimated number of new cases of cancer each year is expected to rise from 11 million in 2002 to 16 million by 2020".
Dr. Rockenshaud emphasized the importance of taking concrete actions towards reducing cancer rates in Palestine. He also said that on the individual level, we all have the power to change our lifestyle and daily practices to become healthier, and hence reduce the risk of cancer.
It is worth mentioning that WHO has been working with the Ministry of Health to implement a Package of essential non communicable disease interventions for primary care including the prevention of risk factors and through the Palestinian National Institute of Public Health several studies haven been conducted to broaden the evidence base, such as: the evaluation of the Ministry of Health's mammography screening programs and assessment of the national cancer registry.
Practical and feasible recommendations were jointly developed with the Ministrh of Health and implemented i.e. an electronic mammogram registry was established to document and facilitate follow up of suspected breast cancer cases. WHO and the PNIPH are committed to further support cancer prevention in Palestine, addressing the social determinants of health.
